Frequently asked questions
- Which CDL schools are listed?
- Only schools listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry that are active, train in person, are open to the public and offer Class A or Class B training. Employer-only programs are left out because you can't enroll in them.
- How do I check if a CDL school is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry?
- Search for it on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. A school that isn't listed can't report your ELDT, and your state checks the registry before your skills test.
- Where do the prices come from?
- From the school's own website, an official state school directory or the US Department of Labor training provider list, with the date we checked. Prices marked as an estimate come from the same school's other locations or programs. If we couldn't find a price, we show "contact for price".
- How far away is each school?
- Distance is approximate, a straight line from the center of your ZIP code. Driving distance is longer.
- Which states are covered?
- Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. We add states as we check their schools.
- Do I have to take ELDT theory at the same school?
- No. Theory and behind-the-wheel training can come from different providers listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Many students do theory online first.
- Do I have to finish theory before behind-the-wheel training?
- No. FMCSA sets no order. Both must be finished before your CDL skills test. Doing theory first means you show up ready for behind-the-wheel training.
